A fusion of stone, sunlight and sparkling sea, the Cyclades are the islands most people picture when they imagine Greece: whitewashed villages, blue-domed chapels and a different anchorage every night. A yacht charter in the Cyclades is the ideal way to explore this Aegean archipelago at your own pace — from cosmopolitan Mykonos and volcanic Santorini to quiet, little-known islands that barely register on the tourist map.

Why Sail the Cyclades?

The Cyclades lie east of the Peloponnese and southeast of Attica, stretching towards Samos and Ikaria in the east and bounded by the Cretan Sea to the south. The group takes its name from the circle (kyklos) it appears to form around the sacred island of Delos, birthplace of the Cycladic civilisation (3000–1000 BC). Despite shared characteristics — sparkling sea, austere landscapes and that unmistakable cube-shaped architecture — each island keeps its own distinct character, best discovered one by one from the deck of your own yacht.

  • Classic Aegean scenery: whitewashed villages, windmills and blue domes
  • A huge choice of islands, from buzzing Mykonos to serene Folegandros
  • Reliable summer meltemi winds for genuine, lively sailing
  • Convenient charter bases on the islands and near Athens
  • Bareboat, skippered and crewed yachts to suit every crew

The Cyclades Islands

From the largest, most fertile islands to bare volcanic outcrops, the Cyclades reward both first-timers and seasoned sailors. Here are some of the highlights you can weave into a charter.

Mykonos & Delos

The most cosmopolitan of all Greek islands, Mykonos pairs world-famous nightlife and beaches with a beautiful old town. Just across the water lies Delos — uninhabited today, but one of the Mediterranean's most important archaeological sites and the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis.

Paros, Naxos & Antiparos

Naxos, the largest and most fertile of the Cyclades, offers vast beaches and mountain villages, while Paros and neighbouring Antiparos have become among the most popular yet still characterful stops in the group — ideal for relaxed island-hopping.

Santorini & Milos

Volcanic geology defines the south-west Cyclades. Santorini, shaped by a now-dormant volcano, is one of the most dramatic landfalls in the Aegean, while Milos is famous for its mineral-rich, sculpted coastline and extraordinary beaches.

Andros, Tinos & Syros

Andros, the northernmost island, is one of the greenest and most beautiful, with steep mountains and deep gorges. Tinos is the holy island of Our Lady, drawing pilgrims every August, and Syros, the administrative capital, brings elegant neoclassical harbours to the cruise.

Quieter Cyclades

For solitude, head to Sifnos and Serifos in the west, the wild beauty of Folegandros, the oblong, mountainous Amorgos on the eastern edge, and the tiny, unspoilt islands of the Eastern Cyclades such as Koufonisia and Iraklia.

Top Charter Bases for the Cyclades

Nautilia Yachting offers several convenient bases to start your Cyclades adventure. On the islands, choose the cosmopolitan Mykonos Tourlos Marina, the harbours of Paros — Naousa Port, Piso Livadi Port and Paros Port — or volcanic Santorini Vlychada Marina. On the mainland near Athens, Lavrio Olympic Marine and Lavrio Port are excellent gateways that let you skip the busy Athens marinas and reach islands like Kea within a few hours.

When to Sail the Cyclades

The Cyclades sailing season runs from May to October. The islands enjoy a Mediterranean climate with an average annual temperature of 18–19°C: mild winters and summers kept comfortably cool by the seasonal meltemi (or "Etesian") winds. July and August bring the strongest meltemi and the liveliest harbours — exhilarating sailing for confident crews — while the shoulder months of May–June and September–October offer lighter winds, pleasant temperatures and far fewer crowds.

Ports of entry and exit with customs, passport control and health services are found at Mykonos, Santorini and Syros. Yacht supply stations for water and fuel are available on Kea, Kythnos, Serifos, Sifnos, Milos, Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Syros, Paros, Naxos, Ios and Santorini.

Essential FAQs for Planning Your Cyclades Yacht Charter

What is the best time of year to charter a yacht in the Cyclades?

The ideal season runs from May to October. The shoulder months of May–June and September–October offer pleasant weather, lighter winds and fewer crowds, while July and August bring the strongest meltemi winds and the liveliest atmosphere ashore.

What types of yachts are available for charter in the Cyclades?

You can choose from monohull sailboats, catamarans, motor yachts, bareboat charters, skippered yachts or fully crewed luxury yachts, depending on your budget and preferences.

How long is a typical yacht charter in the Cyclades?

Charters typically run from one to two weeks. A week is ideal for a focused loop around the western or central islands, while two weeks lets you reach the more distant eastern and southern Cyclades.

Where does a typical Cyclades charter start?

Popular charter bases include Mykonos (Tourlos Marina), Paros (Naousa, Piso Livadi and Paros ports), Santorini (Vlychada Marina), and Lavrio on the mainland for easy access to the islands.

Can I customise my itinerary?

Absolutely — customising your route is one of the best parts of booking with us. Whether you want famous islands like Mykonos, Paros or Santorini or quieter anchorages off the beaten track, we'll recommend must-see destinations, anchorages and dining spots and build the route around your preferences.

Do I need a sailing licence to charter a yacht in the Cyclades?

For a crewed or skippered charter, no licence is required — your professional crew handles everything. For a bareboat charter you need a valid sailing licence recognised by the Greek authorities, such as the ICC or a national equivalent, and at least one other crew member with basic sailing skills. We'll help you with the documentation before your trip.

Can I add a hostess, chef or other crew members?

Yes. You can add a hostess for cleaning and light meals, a chef for gourmet dining, or additional crew such as deckhands. Let us know your requirements and we'll tailor the crew to your needs.

What should I pack for a sailing trip in the Cyclades?

Pack light: breathable clothing and swimwear, non-slip soft-soled shoes for the deck, sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat), personal toiletries and any medication, plus a light jacket for cooler evenings. Boats come equipped with bed linens, towels and kitchenware, so there's no need to overpack.

How does the booking process work?

It's three simple steps: choose your yacht from our fleet; contact us for availability and a personalised quote based on your dates and requirements; then confirm with a deposit. We'll guide you through the paperwork so you can simply set sail and enjoy your trip.

How do I pay for a Cyclades yacht charter?

Booking usually requires a 50% deposit to secure the yacht, with the balance due around four to eight weeks before departure.

What additional costs should I expect besides the charter fee?

Extra costs may include skipper and crew fees, fuel, port and marina fees, provisioning, insurance and optional extras such as water toys or cancellation cover.

What insurance is recommended for a Cyclades charter?

A damage waiver is standard, and cancellation insurance is suggested to protect your deposit and cover unforeseen events during your sailing holiday.

Cube-white villages, volcanic sunsets and a fresh meltemi in the sails — the Cyclades are the Aegean at its most iconic. Pick your yacht, choose your route, and let the wind do the rest.

Your dream, your yacht, your Greece.
