There is no charter base on Andros itself. The closest is Lavrio on the Attica mainland, about 62 km to the north-west, an easy day-sail that makes Andros the ideal shakedown island before the fleet commits to the open Aegean. Further into the Cyclades, the bases at Mykonos and Paros Port (Paroikia) are also within comfortable reach, so Andros works equally well as a route that runs the other way, up towards the mainland.

Where to sail around Andros
Gavrio and Batsi (west coast)
Gavrio is the island's principal harbour, on the sheltered west side facing the Attica coast, and the usual point of arrival for a yacht coming up from Lavrio. A short hop south, Batsi is the island's main resort bay, with tavernas around the waterfront and the monastery of Zoodochos Pigi in the hills behind. Near Gavrio, look out for the tower of Agios Petros, a well-preserved ancient watchtower. This west-facing coast is the calmest place to lie when the Meltemi is up.
Chora (Andros town)
On the south-east coast, Chora is the island capital and its second harbour, one of the most handsome towns in the Cyclades. Neo-classical mansions stand shoulder to shoulder with white Cycladic houses along steep, arcaded alleys, and two central squares tie the town together. The ruined castle and the church of Panagia Palatiani sit within the old walls, while the Archaeological Museum holds finds from the Geometric to the Byzantine periods and the Museum of Contemporary Art shows work by the sculptor Michalis Tombros alongside major Greek and international artists, with important temporary exhibitions each summer.
Beaches and ancient sites
There is good swimming at Nimborio, Paraporti, Korthi bay, Gavrio and Vitali, among others. Inland and along the coast, Andros rewards a walk ashore: the church of the Archangel at Messaria, the monastery of Agios Nikolaos at Apikia (site of the Sariza mineral spring), the monastery of Panagia Panachrantou above Falika, and the upper castle known as "Tis Grias to Kastro" north of the village of Kochylos. Do not miss the ruins of the ancient city at Palaiopoli, and at Zagora nearby, one of the most important Geometric-period settlements found anywhere in Greece.

Andros sits at the northern edge of the Cyclades, where the Meltemi arrives first and blows hardest. This north wind runs from the north down through the archipelago, so most crews plan a downwind route north-to-south, dropping from Andros towards Tinos, Mykonos and the central islands.
