Naxos Town and the Portara
Naxos Town, also called Hora, climbs amphitheatrically up a hillside on the northwest coast and is one of the most attractive towns in the Cyclades. As you come in from the harbour, the imposing marble Portara stands on its islet at the entrance, the surviving gateway of an unfinished temple of Apollo begun in the 6th century BC. Climbing up through the town toward the 13th-century Venetian castle, you pass narrow winding lanes and old stone houses, fine Byzantine churches, the castle with its tower and battlements, and traces of Mycenaean building at the Grotta site. The Archaeological Museum of Naxos holds a notable collection, including early Cycladic figurines.
The interior and the villages
Traces of Greek antiquity turn up across the island, so every part of Naxos has something to see. Near the coastal village of Apollonas on the north side lies a half-finished kouros, a giant statue of a youth from the 6th century BC, still lying in the marble quarry where it was abandoned. Another unfinished kouros can be seen at Melanes. The mountain village of Apiranthos, built in marble, has an interesting museum and preserves a number of local customs. Among the churches worth a stop are Our Lady Protothroni at Tragea and Our Lady Filotitissa in the village of Filoti, close to which the Za cave sits beneath Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades.
Beaches and anchorages
The coastline is abrupt and rocky on the south side and more sheltered to the west, where numerous inlets and long sandy beaches line the shore. The best swimming beaches run down that western flank: Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Mikri Vigla, Kastraki, Plaka, Alyko and Pyrgaki, with Agiassos further south. On the far side of the island there are beaches at Apollonas, Psili Ammos, Panormos and Pachia Ammos. For crews, the west coast bays offer the calmest lunch and swim stops, while the town harbour is the main overnight base with the fullest services.
