What to see around the island
Hora and the north
Perched on a steep hill, Hora (also called Serifos), the main town of the island, looks like a fairytale settlement with its little cube-shaped houses, churches in the Cycladic style, and a Venetian castle higher up. Near the village of Galani stands the fortress-like monastery of the Archangels (Moni Taxiarhon), which houses fine wall-paintings along with important books and manuscripts. The village of Panagia, which takes its name from a fine 10th-century church, commands a panoramic view over the whole island.
The mining coast: Koutalas and Megalo Livadi
In the village of Koutalas, about 15 km southwest of Hora, you will find the ruins of the Old Woman's castle, towers from the Hellenistic period, and a 19th-century iron-ore loading bridge. Similar bridges, together with the neoclassical building of the old mining company, still stand in the nearby village of Megalo Livadi. Close to Koutalas lies the famous Cave of the Cyclops.
Beaches
The greatest attraction of Serifos is its magnificent beaches. Megalo Livadi, Koutalas, Agios Sostis, Psili Amos, Agios Ioanis, and Sikamia each reward a short hop under sail, and several are best reached from the water. No. Serifos has no charter base of its own. Most yachts sail to the island from Paros, about 56 km to the northeast, where our Cyclades fleet is based. Serifos also pairs well with Sifnos, Kythnos, and the other western Cyclades.
