Kastro and the churches
The old capital, Kastro, is the exception to the cubic village pattern, an example of medieval town planning perched above the sea. Its Archaeological Museum holds Archaic and Hellenistic sculpture and ceramics spanning the Geometric to the Byzantine periods. Picturesque windmills stand along the ridges, and the island is famously dotted with hundreds of churches and chapels. The monasteries are held in high regard, among them Agios Symeon, Profitis Ilias (Ai-Lias), the Vrissi monastery with its small Byzantine museum, and Chrysopigi, home to the patron saint of the island.
Beaches and coves
The mountainous interior gives way to strips of coastal plain and a run of clean, attractive beaches. Kamares, Faros and Platis Gialos are the best known, the last also a centre for the island's fine ceramics. Quieter, lesser-known bays reward crews with their own tender: Chersonissos, Vroulidia, Fikiada and Fassolou among them. Tourist facilities are of a good standard, so it is easy to combine a lively evening ashore with a peaceful anchorage close to nature.
