A yacht charter in Lefkas is the easiest way into the southern Ionian. The island sits behind a sheltered canal on the Greek mainland's western edge, with four charter bases of its own and two more at Preveza, and it puts Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Ithaca and Kefalonia inside comfortable day hops. Short distances, a steady afternoon breeze and an anchorage at the end of almost every leg make Lefkada the friendliest place in Greece to rent a boat, whether you sail bareboat or take a skipper.

Why sail from Lefkas

Lefkada earns its reputation as the beginner-friendly capital of Greek sailing, and experienced crews come back for the same reasons: everything worth seeing is close, and the weather is predictable.

• Very short legs. Most passages on a week from Lefkas run 5 to 20 nautical miles, so you are usually anchored by early afternoon.
• Reliable, gentle wind. The Ionian's prevailing summer breeze is a northwesterly that fills in around midday and fades in the evening, typically Force 3 to 5. No meltemi, no long windless crossings.
• Sheltered water. The inner Ionian, between Lefkada, Meganisi, Kalamos and the mainland, is almost landlocked, which keeps the sea flat even when it blows.
• Four bases on the island. Lefkas Marina, Lefkas Port, Nydri and Nikiana, plus Preveza on the mainland, so embarkation can be matched to your flight.
• Easy arrival. Lefkada is the only Ionian island reached by road, over the causeway and floating bridge, with Preveza (Aktion) airport about 20 km from the marina.
• Somewhere to eat every night. Taverna quays at Sivota, Vathi on Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Palairos and Fiskardo mean you rarely have to provision for the whole week.

Bases on Lefkada island

D-Marin Lefkas Marina is the largest and best equipped base on the island, with full technical support, fuel, provisioning and a professional check-in operation. It sits just inside the canal, a few minutes' walk from Lefkada town, and it is where most of our fleet is berthed.

Lefkas Port puts you on the town quay itself, in the middle of the restaurants, bakeries and chandlers of Lefkada town. It is the most convenient base for longer charters that need serious provisioning before departure.

Nydri Port is the liveliest option, a busy waterfront on the east coast with easy access to Skorpios, Meganisi and the Vlycho bay anchorages. Starting here saves you the canal transit and the bridge schedule on day one.

Nikiana Port is the quiet alternative: a small, scenic harbour between Lygia and Nydri, well suited to crews who want a calm start rather than a resort one.

Mainland bases at Preveza

Preveza Marina is a well organised base roughly 20 minutes from Aktion airport, which makes it the fastest transfer of the lot. Preveza Port offers a more traditional harbour experience in the middle of town, with a straightforward run south into the Lefkada cruising grounds.

The island itself

Lefkada town

The capital and main harbour is a Heptanesian town spread along the seaboard, facing the coast of Akarnania across the canal. Earthquake-resistant timber and sheet-metal upper storeys give it a look found nowhere else in Greece: colourful tiled-roofed houses, small squares, narrow streets and a long waterfront promenade that runs past the marina. Provisioning, banks, chandlery and the best selection of restaurants on the island are all here.

The east coast: Lygia, Nikiana and Nydri

The road south from Lefkada town strings together the island's sheltered side. Lygia is still an important fishing centre, Nikiana a quiet holiday village, and Nydri the most developed resort on the island, looking out over a bay scattered with green islets. Skorpios, once the private island of Aristotle Onassis, lies just offshore and is the view from most Nydri anchorages. Inland from the village, the Dimosari Gorge is an easy half-day walk to waterfalls and swimming pools, one of the few shore excursions worth losing a sailing morning for.

Vasiliki and the south

Vasiliki, at the southern end of the island, sits in a closed bay surrounded by greenery and is one of Europe's best known windsurfing spots thanks to the thermal wind that funnels down the mountain each afternoon. That same wind makes it a lively sail rather than a lazy one. From here, caique trips run to Cape Lefkata and Cavo Nira, and the west coast beaches of Porto Katsiki and Egremni are a short drive or a settled-weather sail away.

Festivals and events

The Festivals of Word and Art run in Lefkada town from June to August, with folklore, theatre and music drawing visitors from across the Ionian. Nydri hosts the world formula jet-ski championships each June, which is worth knowing about whether you want to watch it or avoid it.

A short history of Lefkas

Colonists founded the city of Lefkas in the sixth century BC and cut through the isthmus that linked the peninsula to the mainland, creating the channel that yachts still use today. During the Peloponnesian War, Leukas sided with the Corinthians. It was later subjugated by the kingdom of Macedon and became a Roman province in 197 BC. After the Frankish sack of Constantinople in 1204 it passed to the Despotate of Epirus, then came under Ottoman rule until 1684, and was finally united with Greece in 1864.

Where to sail from Lefkas

The inner Ionian is a compact cruising ground: almost everything below is within a morning's sail of the last anchorage. The chart below shows how the pieces fit together.

Meganisi and the Skorpios islets

Meganisi lies about 4 nautical miles east of Nydri and is the standard first or last night of a Lefkas charter. Vathi and Spartochori have quay space and tavernas, Port Atheni is a long, quiet inlet for anchoring, and the Papanikolis sea cave on the west coast is worth the detour. On the way across you pass Skorpios, Skorpidi and the smaller islets in Nydri bay.

Kalamos and Kastos

Two of the most authentic islands left in the Ionian, roughly 13 to 21 NM from Lefkas. Kalamos has a steep village above a small quay with laid moorings, and Kastos is quieter still, with a handful of tavernas and clear water on both sides. Neither has an airport, a resort or much traffic.

Ithaca and Kefalonia

South of the inner Ionian, Ithaca offers Vathy's deep natural harbour and the small fishing ports of Kioni and Frikes, all within a morning's sail. Kefalonia adds Fiskardo, the prettiest harbour in the Ionian and the busiest, plus Sami, Agia Efimia and the caves inland. A one-week charter reaches both comfortably; two weeks lets you add Zakynthos.

The mainland coast

Palairos, Vonitsa, Astakos and the Gulf of Amvrakikos give the cruising ground its eastern edge, and Sivota on Lefkada's south coast is the classic last-night anchorage: a near-enclosed bay ringed with tavernas that run lines ashore for you.

North towards Paxos and Corfu

A typical week from Lefkas

One of our standard Lefkas routes covers about 64 NM over seven nights, which is a relaxed pace with time to swim every day. Every leg is short enough to leave after breakfast and arrive for lunch.

• Day 1Lefkas. Check-in, provisioning in town, first night alongside in the marina.
• Day 2Palairos, 11 NM. Mainland harbour with a good quay and a long beach.
• Day 3Kalamos, 16 NM. Village quay below the pine slopes, laid moorings and one very good taverna.
• Day 4Kastos, 5 NM. The quietest island in the group, and the shortest hop of the week.
• Day 5Sivota, 13 NM. Lefkada's enclosed southern bay, lines ashore, tavernas all around.
• Day 6Meganisi, 8 NM. Vathi or Port Atheni, with the Papanikolis cave on the way.
• Day 7Lefkas, 11 NM. Back through the canal in time for the bridge, check-out next morning.

The Ionian season runs from April to the end of October. Lefkada is greener and wetter than the Aegean islands, which keeps it comfortable in high summer but means the shoulder months feel genuinely different.
