Sailing Sithonia: The Heart of Halkidiki by Yacht

Stretching south between the Toroneos and Singitic Gulfs, Sithonia is the middle of Halkidiki's three peninsulas — and the gateway to one of northern Greece's most rewarding sailing regions. From our base at Nikiti Marina, a week aboard takes in dramatic natural harbours, sheltered turquoise anchorages, traditional fishing villages, and uninterrupted views of Mount Athos rising 2,000 metres straight out of the sea.

Why Sail Halkidiki from Sithonia

Three things make this region special for sailors. First, the geography: Sithonia sits between Kassandra and Mount Athos, giving you three peninsulas and several gulfs to explore from a single base. Second, the winds: moderate summer northerlies, generally gentler than the central Aegean Meltemi, which makes the area well-suited to families and less experienced sailors as well as seasoned crews. Third, the variety: a single week can include both sides of Sithonia, the calmer Kassandra coast, and Porto Koufo — one of the most spectacular natural harbours in Greece.

Option 1 — Sithonia & Kassandra Loop (107 NM)

A balanced week combining Sithonia's wild southern tip with the calmer beaches and marinas of Kassandra.

  • Day 1 — Nikiti: Check-in, settle aboard, evening in the village.
  • Day 2 — Porto Koufo (22 NM): Sail south to one of Greece's most enclosed natural harbours.
  • Day 3 — Paliouri / Miraggio (10 NM): Cross the gulf to the Kassandra peninsula.
  • Day 4 — Nea Skioni (16 NM): Continue up the Kassandra coast.
  • Day 5 — Porto Carras (25 NM): Back across to Sithonia and the largest marina on the peninsula.
  • Day 6 — Nea Fokea (20 NM): A scenic stop on the eastern coast of Kassandra.
  • Day 7 — Nikiti (14 NM): Easy sail back for Saturday morning check-out.

Option 2 — Eastern Sithonia & Mount Athos Views (114 NM)

The route that takes in the most of Sithonia itself, including the eastern coast with its dramatic views across to Mount Athos.

  • Day 1 — Nikiti: Embarkation and check-in.
  • Day 2 — Porto Carras (11 NM): Short hop south to Sithonia's main marina.
  • Day 3 — Ormos Panagias (42 NM): A longer passage around the southern tip and up the eastern coast to a traditional fishing village.
  • Day 4 — Ammouliani (9 NM): The only inhabited island off the Halkidiki coast — clear water and a relaxed island feel.
  • Day 5 — Porto Koufo (30 NM): Back down the eastern coast and around to the deepest natural harbour in Greece.
  • Day 6 — Neos Marmaras (12 NM): The lively resort town on Sithonia's western coast.
  • Day 7 — Nikiti (10 NM): Short final sail back to base.

Option 3 — Kassandra Highlights with Sani & Miraggio (114 NM)

For guests who want more time on the calmer Kassandra side, including the upscale Sani Marina and Miraggio.

  • Day 1 — Nikiti: Embarkation.
  • Day 2 — Paliouri / Miraggio (17 NM): Cross to the southern tip of Kassandra.
  • Day 3 — Nea Skioni (16 NM): Up the western Kassandra coast.
  • Day 4 — Sani Marina (19 NM): One of the finest marinas in northern Greece.
  • Day 5 — Nea Skioni (19 NM): Return south for a quieter night.
  • Day 6 — Porto Koufo (21 NM): Cross back to Sithonia for the dramatic natural harbour.
  • Day 7 — Nikiti (22 NM): Final sail back along the western coast.

Two-Week Option: Halkidiki & Sporades (301 NM)

For those with two weeks aboard, we offer a longer route that combines Halkidiki with the Sporades islands to the south — a chance to experience both the sheltered northern waters and the more open Aegean sailing of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos, and the remote islands of Kira Panagia and Skantzoura. Highlights include the National Marine Park of Alonnisos and the cosmopolitan harbour of Skiathos.

Distances run roughly 17–43 nautical miles between key stops — manageable in any well-found yacht, but worth planning around the weather window for the open-water crossings.

Highlight Stops in Halkidiki

Porto Koufo

The deepest and most enclosed natural harbour in Greece — its name means "deaf port" because the surrounding cliffs muffle wind and sound so completely. A classic overnight stop on every Sithonia itinerary, with waterside tavernas serving the day's catch.

Ormos Panagias

A working fishing village on the eastern coast of Sithonia, with a small harbour and quayside tavernas. The base for the eastern-route itinerary and a great place to taste fish straight off the local boats.

Ammouliani Island

The only inhabited island off the Halkidiki coast, sitting between Sithonia and the Athos peninsula. Crystal-clear water, sandy beaches, and a quiet local atmosphere away from the resort coast.

Sani Marina

One of northern Greece's most upscale marinas, on the western coast of Kassandra. A polished stop for an evening of fine dining or a touch of luxury midway through the week.

Porto Carras Marina

Sithonia's largest marina, with full facilities and the only large-scale resort complex on the peninsula. A useful base for crew swaps or a slightly more sociable evening.

Mount Athos Views

From the eastern coast of Sithonia — particularly near Ormos Panagias and Ammouliani — Mount Athos rises 2,000 metres straight out of the sea, glowing pink at sunset. One of the unforgettable backdrops of any Halkidiki charter.

Choosing the Right Yacht for Halkidiki

Halkidiki's gentler winds and sheltered anchorages work well with most yacht types. The right choice depends on your group:

  • Catamarans — ideal for families and groups: stable, spacious, with plenty of deck space for swim stops and shallow draft for quieter anchorages.
  • Sailing monohulls — well-suited to couples and small groups who want a more traditional sailing feel.
  • Motor yachts — a comfortable choice for guests prioritising speed and air-conditioned interior space.
