Vathy — the capital and main harbour
The island’s capital and port, Vathy, is a handsome Heptanesian town wrapped around a deep, sheltered gulf built on the site of the Homeric harbour of Phorkys — the name simply means “deep”. Inside the enclosed bay sits the green islet of Lazareto, with its little chapel of the Saviour and the ruins of Venetian buildings once used as a quarantine station. Ashore, the Archaeological Museum, the Folklore and Maritime Museum and the town library are all worth an hour, while the cathedral of the Virgin holds a wood-carved iconostasis of 1793 and a belltower of 1820. A ruined Venetian castle guards the harbour entrance.
Frikes and Kioni — the northern coves
On the east coast, the picturesque little harbour of Frikes — flanked by old windmills — is the ferry link to Kefalonia and Lefkada and a fine, calm overnight stop. A short hop south, Kioni is the island’s prettiest village and a protected settlement, arranged around a natural harbour with a cosmopolitan, easy-going air. Both make relaxed town-quay moorings with tavernas a few steps from the boat.
Villages and Homeric sites
The shadow of the Homeric king falls across the whole island. At Aetos — the narrow isthmus linking Ithaca’s north and south — is the so-called “Castle of Odysseus”, where Heinrich Schliemann uncovered walls and temple remains while searching for the palace of the epics. West of Vathy lies the Cave of the Nymphs, and in the north the hilltop hamlet of Anogi, with its Byzantine wall-paintings and the tall standing rocks known as the Menhirs. Stavros, the largest village, sits in an area rich with excavations: nearby Pilikata Hill and the Loizos Cave in the Bay of Polis have yielded finds that some archaeologists link to the ancient city of Ithaca itself.

Ithaca has swimming to suit every taste. Close to Vathy are Filiatro — the most popular — along with Sarakiniko, a favourite yacht anchorage, plus Loutsa, Tsirpis and Paliokaravo. Further north lie the superb beach of Gidaki and the coves of Skinos and Mnimata, while northern Ithaca offers Aspros Yalos, the bay of Polis, Afales and the sheltered inlets around Frikes and Kioni.
