Sailing Kassandra: The Western Gem of Halkidiki
Stretching south from the Halkidiki mainland, Kassandra is the westernmost of the region's three peninsulas — and a different sailing experience from its eastern sister, Sithonia. Endless stretches of sandy beach, dense pine forests running down to the shore, and a string of welcoming fishing villages and resort towns make this side of Halkidiki ideal for sailors who want easy passages, calm anchorages, and a relaxed coastal rhythm. From our base at Nikiti Marina on Sithonia, Kassandra is just a short crossing away and forms part of every classic Halkidiki itinerary.
Why Sail the Kassandra Coast
Kassandra offers a particular combination that's hard to find elsewhere in Greece: gentle conditions, short distances between stops, and a coastline that mixes natural beauty with the comforts of a developed resort region. You can spend the morning anchored in a quiet bay below pine trees and the evening dining at a busy seafront taverna in a lively village — all within the same day's sail. It's an especially good fit for families, first-time charterers, and anyone who prefers a relaxed pace to long open-water passages.
Kassandra at a Glance
- Location: Westernmost of the three Halkidiki peninsulas
- Typical access from Nikiti Marina: 10–25 NM to most western Kassandra stops
- Character: long sandy beaches, pine forests, fishing villages, established resorts
- Conditions: sheltered waters, moderate summer breezes, short daily passages
- Best for: families, relaxed cruising, mixed beach-and-village itineraries
Nea Poteidea and Nea Fokea: Kassandra's Historic Coast
Two of Kassandra's most characterful stops sit close together on the eastern coast: Nea Poteidea, built on the ruins of an ancient Corinthian colony of the same name, and Nea Fokea, whose Byzantine tower stands almost in the water at the edge of the village.
⚠ Local tip: The Nea Poteidea canal bridge has limited clearance — passage with a sailing yacht's mast can be dangerous and is generally not advised. Most sailing routes round Kassandra at its southern tip rather than passing through the canal. If in doubt, ask our base manager before planning a transit.
Inland Detour: Petralona Cave
For guests who fancy a half-day off the water, the Petralona Cave sits at the foot of Mount Katsika, about 800 m outside the village of the same name. It's one of the most important palaeontological sites in Greece, with finds dating back roughly 200,000 years now displayed in the cave's own museum and at the University of Thessaloniki. Easily reached by a short taxi from the northern Kassandra stops.
The Eastern Coast: From Afytos to Pefkochori
The eastern coast of Kassandra — the side facing Sithonia across the Toroneos Gulf — is dotted with some of the prettiest villages on the peninsula.
Afytos
A small, traditional village perched above the sea, with old stone houses, narrow lanes, and exceptional views back toward Sithonia. One of the most photogenic stops in Halkidiki.
Kallithea
Above the village stand the ruins of the ancient Sanctuary of Zeus Ammon, a reminder that this coastline has been settled and sacred for thousands of years. The modern village offers easy provisioning and lively evenings.
Kriopigi, Polychrono, Chaniotis & Pefkochori
A string of resort villages along the eastern coast, each surrounded by thick vegetation and fronted by long sandy beaches. Plenty of options for an overnight anchorage with restaurants ashore.
The Southern Tip: Paliouri and Miraggio Marina
At the southern tip of Kassandra you'll find Paliouri and the modern Miraggio Marina — a popular overnight stop on the classic Nikiti round-trip (roughly 10–17 NM from Nikiti depending on route). The marina offers full facilities and the coastline here delivers some of the finest panoramic views in northern Greece.
The Western Coast: Quiet Villages and Long Beaches
Rounding the tip and heading north up Kassandra's western coast, the pace slows and the resorts thin out. This is the quieter side of the peninsula — lush green hills, traditional villages, and pristine stretches of coastline.
Agia Paraskevi, Agios Nikolaos & Kalandra
Three small villages set against a backdrop of dense vegetation and clear water. Excellent for lunch stops or quiet overnight anchorages away from the busier resorts.
Nea Skioni, Possidi & Siviri
Working fishing villages with sandy beaches, small seaside tavernas, and some of the freshest seafood in Halkidiki. Nea Skioni in particular features on multiple Nikiti-base itineraries — a 16–19 NM sail that delivers a classic Kassandra evening: fresh fish off the boats, local wine, and a sunset over the gulf.
Sani Marina: Kassandra's Polished Stop
At the northern end of the western coast sits Sani Marina — one of the most upscale marinas in northern Greece, set within a famous pine-forest beach resort complex. It's a popular stop on the Nikiti round-trip (around 19 NM from Nea Skioni) and a chance to add a touch of polish to the week: gourmet dining, beach clubs, and full marina facilities.
Suggested Kassandra Stops on a Week-Long Charter
Two of our three classic one-week Halkidiki itineraries from Nikiti are built around Kassandra:
Sithonia & Kassandra Loop (107 NM)
Includes Paliouri / Miraggio (10 NM), Nea Skioni (16 NM), Porto Carras (25 NM), and Nea Fokea (20 NM) — a balanced week between the two peninsulas.
Kassandra Highlights with Sani & Miraggio (114 NM)
A Kassandra-focused week: Paliouri / Miraggio (17 NM), Nea Skioni (16 NM), Sani Marina (19 NM), then back via Porto Koufo on the Sithonia side. The best route for guests who want the calmer western peninsula as the heart of their trip.
Both routes can be tailored to your group, dates, and the conditions of the week.
Choosing the Right Yacht for Kassandra
Kassandra's short distances and sheltered anchorages mean almost any yacht works well here. The right choice depends on your group:
- Catamarans — ideal for families and groups: stable, spacious, and with shallow draft for the coastal anchorages.
- Sailing monohulls — well-suited to couples and small groups who want a more traditional sailing feel.
- Motor yachts — a comfortable option for guests prioritising speed and air-conditioned interiors.
