The island is situated at the entrance of the Argolic Gulf, in front of Kosta, Ermionide, and is divided by a narrow strait of sea, 1.3 nautical miles million wide. It is the most southern island in the group. Spetses was first inhabited since the Bronze Age (2500-2000 BC), as evidenced by remains of walls, statues and clay tools, found at locations of Agia Marina. 

In the years of Turkish rule, the people of Spetses acquired a major maritime power and lead along with neighboring residents of Hydra, in the fight against the Turks. The charming town of Spetses, and perhaps one of the most stylish and elegant capitals of islands. It has an atmosphere of old good times, created by the neoclassical houses and reinforced by the lack of machinery and the movement of old single-horse trailers. The heart of the small town beats in the historic square of Dapia, with guns, who remember the battles against the Ottoman Turks. Advancing towards old port, you can meet a lot of neoclassical houses and the cathedral of Agios Nikolaos. It was the church of a monastery.

In the old port, there are the picturesque old arsenals followed by the church of Panagia of Armatas on a impressive hillside, with magnificent view. It was built in remembrance of the victory of the islanders, in September 1822, near the lighthouse. 

Advancing to the right of square of Dapia, there is the imposing building of the old hotel and a monument Poseidonion dedicated to the Bouboulina, the most important female figure of Revolution of 1821. Here is a neighborhood of Kounoupitsa with the amazing buildings that belong to School of Anargyrion-Koryalenion, founded in 1927.

In the town, it is worthwhile to visit the homes of: Bouboulina, Botasis and Chatziyannis Mexis.

At the highest point of the town, stands the church of Agia Triada, built in 1793. On the west coast, near Agii Anargyri, there is the cave of Bekiris, of historical value. 

By yacht you can reach all the beaches of the island: Agii Anargyri, Agia Paraskevi, Zogeri , Vrellas, Agia Marina, Xylokeriza. Spetses has excellent tourist infrastructure and has many local entertainment, restaurants, etc.. Also offers opportunities for water sports and many choices for the nightlife.

In August there is organized a festival, "Anargyria", that involves cultural events, and in mid-September there is the representation of the naval battle Army beginning of the church of Panagia tis Armatas, near the lighthouse of the old port. The events include athletic competitions and dances.

South-east of Spetses is located Spetsopoula, an island of private property with a very luxuriant vegetation.

Spetses is an ideal base for excursions to Kosta, Porto Heli, Kranidi, Nauplion and the archaeological sites of Argolida, located on the opposite coast. In summer, numerous theatrical performances are held in the theater of Epidaurus.

In the port of Spetses, there is infrastructure for private boats, there is possible to obtain supplies, water or fuel.
