Where to sail around Kalymnos
Pothia, the capital
Today's capital, Pothia (also called Kalymnos), was founded around 1850 by people moving down from the old inland town of Chorio. Its brightly coloured houses fan out around the harbour like seats in an amphitheatre, dropping down the slopes to the fishing boats below. On the quay stands a church dedicated to Christ the Saviour, decorated with murals and an iconostasis by the sculptor Giannoulis Halepas. Above the town sits Pera Kastro, the Castle di Chrisocheria, worth the climb for the view over the port.
The west coast: Masouri, Mirties and Emporios
The western shore is where most sailors linger. Masouri and Mirties look across a narrow channel to the islet of Telendos, with tavernas serving seafood, "fouskes" and octopus meatballs. Panormos and Kamari sit nearby, and on the road there you pass the ruins of a three-nave basilica built around the 6th century on the site of an ancient temple. The quiet village of Emporios lies further north, a calm anchorage away from the crowds.
Vathi and the northern bays
Vathi is a small, dramatic inlet on the east coast, a fertile citrus valley reached through a narrow rocky gorge, one of the most memorable approaches in the Dodecanese. To the north, Arginontas offers a sheltered bay, and Kefala (Kephala) cave near the south of the island can be reached and approached by boat, a rewarding stop for crews who want something off the usual route.

Kalymnos sits in the path of the summer meltemi, which blows from the north across the Aegean. Because the wind runs north to south, downwind routes are easiest when you sail from the northern Dodecanese down towards Kos and Kalymnos, then on to Kos or Rhodes. The west-coast bays give good shelter, and an experienced skipper will pick anchorages with the day's wind in mind.
