Yacht charter in Nisyros, the volcanic island of the Dodecanese

Mandraki and the island's villages
Mandraki, the capital and main port, lies on the northwest coast at the foot of a steep hill. The whiteness of its houses stands in striking contrast to the dark volcanic rock around them. Above the town looms a castle built by the Knights of St. John, and clinging to the cliff nearby is the monastery of Panagia Spiliani (Our Lady of the Cave), the patroness of the island, built in 1600 and home to a lovely 18th-century iconostasis.
Inland and to the south, the village of Nikia perches on the crest of a hill some 400 metres above the sea, its white houses set off by brightly painted doors, windows, and tiled roofs. Emborios sits to the southeast of Mandraki in a green interior of olive, fig, and fruit trees and grapevines, while the small fishing village of Pali lies just east of Loutra.
The volcano and the caldera
Nisyros was formed by volcanic eruptions and is home to the youngest volcano in Greece. To reach the crater you head almost to the middle of the island, to the Lakki plateau, where the main caldera floor opens up roughly 260 metres across and around 30 metres deep, with steps leading down to its centre. The air carries the reek of sulphur and the ground steams through vents, giving the whole basin a lunar strangeness that is well worth the walk ashore.
Beaches and hot springs
The island's hot springs, famed since antiquity and still in use, are found at Loutra, about 1.5 kilometres from Mandraki. Nisyros is dotted with quiet beaches, including Hochlaki with its black volcanic pebbles right by Mandraki, plus Agia Irini and Avlaki, and the beaches on Gyali, the small islet directly opposite the harbour.

When to sail to Nisyros
The Dodecanese season runs from late spring to early autumn. The meltemi, the prevailing summer wind, blows from the north, so downwind routes generally run north to south, for example working down from Kos and Kalymnos towards Nisyros, Tilos, and Rhodes. Plan your legs with the wind on your back rather than against it.
