Sailing around Astypalaia

Chóra and the castle
Chóra, the island's capital and main port, climbs a steep headland to a well-preserved Venetian castle built by the Quirini family. Below it, a cluster of small whitewashed houses with brightly painted blue doors and balconies spills down towards the sea, threaded by a line of restored windmills. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful settlements in the Aegean, and arriving from the water at dusk is the best way to see it.
Beaches and anchorages
Two of the finest beaches are easiest to reach by boat. Kaminakia is a sheltered, pebbled cove on the south coast with clear, deep water, while nearby Vatses combines a broad sandy beach with a sea cave full of stalactites and stalagmites just along the shore. For calmer swimming, the sandy bays of Agios Konstantinos and Papou are both excellent choices and offer good holding for an afternoon at anchor.

Because Astypalaia sits in open water between two island groups, the summer meltemi — which blows from the north — is worth planning around: build a route that works down from north to south so the wind is behind you on the longer legs.
