Gialos and Chorio
The main harbour of Gialos is the island's showpiece, a tiered sweep of ochre, blue, and terracotta facades climbing the hillside to the older village of Chorio above. Tie up stern-to along the quay to be in the heart of the tavernas and shops, and climb the Kali Strata staircase for the view back down over the masts. In peak season the quay fills early, so plan your arrival for the afternoon.
Panormitis
On the island's southern side, the Monastery of St Michael of Panormitis sits at the head of a deep, sheltered bay. The anchorage is calm in most conditions and the whitewashed monastery complex, with its baroque bell tower, is the spiritual centre of Symi. It makes a natural overnight stop before crossing on towards Rhodes or Tilos.
Swimming coves
The east and south coasts hide a string of clear-water inlets, Agios Georgios Dysalonas under its dramatic cliff, Nanou with its pebble beach and pine backdrop, Marathounda, and Agios Vasilios. Most have little or no road access, so on a yacht you often have them close to yourself outside the midday tripper-boat window.

When to sail to Symi
The Dodecanese season runs from late April to October. June and September give you warm water, long days, and lighter crowds than the August peak. Through high summer the meltemi blows from the north, so when you are planning a multi-island route it pays to work north to south, starting up towards Kos or Kalymnos and running down the wind towards Symi and Rhodes rather than beating back up against it.
